About the Family

An international, well-travelled family in Prenzlauer Berg is looking for a highly flexible, capable and adventurous nanny to support their 6-year-old daughter. The family shares custody and prioritizes spending quality time together when their daughter is with them, meaning the nanny will often work relatively few hours during a normal week in Berlin. The contracted hours are intended in large part to compensate the nanny for maintaining the flexibility and availability this unusual role requires.

The family has extensive experience employing a nanny: their previous nanny was with them for several years and became a trusted part of the family. They are now hoping to build another long-term relationship with someone who genuinely enjoys a dynamic and spontaneous lifestyle.

The Schedule

This is not a traditional 30-hour-per-week nanny position. During an ordinary week in Berlin, the nanny may only be needed for a few hours. The nanny is expected to be available during regular shifts, but may not always be called upon. The contract is designed to provide the flexibility required for travel, last-minute childcare and changing schedules.

The family follows a shared-custody schedule:

  • Even weeks: Their daughter is with them from Thursday at 15:00 until Friday morning. The nanny should generally be available on Thursday, although actual childcare is often no more than 1–3 hours.
  • Odd weeks: Their daughter is with them from Friday at 15:00 until Monday morning. The family may occasionally need approximately 3–5 hours of childcare across the weekend, although some weekends require no nanny hours at all.
  • Occasional sick care: If their daughter cannot attend Kita/school, help may occasionally be needed on Monday mornings or Friday afternoons.
  • Travel: Approximately every few months, the nanny may accompany the family on international trips, potentially including destinations such as the US, Singapore and elsewhere in Europe. Travel periods can involve roughly full-time hours and significantly more hands-on care.

Travel can occasionally arise with only a few days’ notice, so this position is best suited to someone who finds spontaneity genuinely exciting rather than stressful.

About Their Daughter

Their 6-year-old daughter is curious, confident and determined. She enjoys reading and learning to read, playgrounds, dancing, maths, airplanes, knights and castles.

The family takes a child-led approach influenced by Montessori principles. They want their nanny to support their daughter’s curiosity and interests rather than constantly directing her activities, while still encouraging appropriate boundaries and age-appropriate responsibility.

Mealtimes are an important part of the family’s routine, and they generally sit down and eat together. Bedtime follows dinner at approximately 19:30–20:00 and usually includes brushing teeth, a bedtime story and quiet time together.

The Ideal Candidate

The family is looking for someone optimistic, energetic, highly organized and genuinely comfortable with spontaneity. A can-do attitude is essential. The right person should be able to adapt quickly when plans change while remaining reliable, attentive and practically organized.

Because international travel is an important part of the position, the nanny must be comfortable travelling at short notice and should have the documentation necessary to travel internationally, including to the United States. A driver’s licence is also strongly preferred.

German and English are required. The family would particularly appreciate someone who enjoys actively supporting their daughter’s English development. Language-teaching experience would be a plus, and Mandarin would be an additional bonus.

Above all, this role needs someone who is exceptionally dependable: able to keep track of passports, documents, schedules, keys, phones, connections and other practical details while travelling.

This is an unusual position, but potentially an excellent fit for a nanny who wants the security of a substantial long-term contract without a conventional five-day working week—and who genuinely enjoys travel, flexibility and a fast-changing schedule.
